Joseph Smith Farm

Chronological Events

 

1805   Joseph Smith Jr. was born 2'1 December in Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont.

 

1816      Smith Family moved to Palmyra, New York.

 

1818      The Smith Family began to purchase the I 00 acres of virgin forest which would become their farm and they built a log home just north of the Palmyra/Manchester town line.

 

1820   In the early  spring, God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to 14 year old Joseph Smith Jr. in a grove of trees on the farm.

 

1822      Alvin and the family began building the large frame home.

 

1823   The night of September 2 1, a heavenly messenger, the Angel Moroni', appeared to Joseph Smith Jr. in the log home.

September 22, Joseph Smith Jr. was directed by the Angel Moroni to the Hill Cumorah and viewed the gold plates.

Alvin died on November 19, in the 25th year of his life and was buried in Swift's Cemetery in Palmyra.

 

1824 - September 22, Joseph Smith Jr. made annual visits to the Hill Cumorah for instructions

1827        from the Angel Moroni.

 

1825      In the early spring, Joseph Smith Sr. family moved into the uncompleted frame home.

 

1827   Joseph Smith Jr. and Emma Hale were married on January 18, in South Bainbridge and came to the frame home to live with Joseph's parents.

September 22, Joseph Smith Jr. received the Gold Plates and the Urim and Thummim.

In December Joseph and Emma moved to Harmony, Penn., and Martin Harris gave Joseph $50 to help make the move.

 

1828   In July, Martin Harris came to the frame home to report the loss of 1 16 pages of manuscript to Joseph Smith Jr.    Oliver Cowdrey came to Palmyra to teach school.

 

1829   In April, the Joseph Smith Sr. family moved from the frame home back into the original log home to live with Hyrum, Jerusha and their family.

In the early summer, the eight witnesses were shown the plates by Joseph Smith Jr. on the Smith Farm. Oliver Cowdrey began writing the printer's manuscript.

1830   In October, the Joseph Smith Sr. family moved to Waterloo, New York.
