| In the Winter of 1845-1846, The Saints crossed the Mississippi to Montrose, Iowa and traveled about 9 miles to Sugar Creek. Their next major river crossing was the Des Moines River. Temporary settlements were founded in Garden Grove and Mt. Pisgah to grow crops for later Saints. A log chapel was built in Kanesville, across the river from Winter Quarters, Nebraska.

William Pitt organized a brass band while in Nauvoo. The band played for the entertainment of the Saints as they crossed Iowa, and also played for much needed funds at places such as the Van Buren court house.
