Maps and references.

Below is a sample of the many maps and references which can be used in following the migration of the Latter Day Saints.  Some references are copied directly into this site.  These are photocopied maps with no copyright which are given out at various LDS visitor's centers at no cost to the visitor.

General LDS church history

Church History in the Fullness of Times.  The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Religion 341-43.  Published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  This can be purchased at Deseret Book.

Guide Books

The Travelers' Guide to Historic Mormon America by R. Don Oscarson and Stanley B. Kimball.  Publisher Press, Salt Lake City, Utah.  This guide devotes one to two pages to each of the major LDS sites, giving a brief history, description and a map.  This is a  very useful guide to use in conjunction with state or local guides and trail maps.

The Mormon Pioneer Trail Church Pioneer Sesquicentennial (150th) celebration.  A Highway and Trail Etiquette Guide.  This can be picked up at LDS visitor's centers and is a very nice compliment to the Traveler's Guide above.  Several sites such as the Montrose Landing or the site where William Clayton penned 'Come Come Ye Saints' are listed here, but not in the Traveler's Guide above.

MTA 1997 Official Guide.  The Mormon Pioneer Trail.  by Stanley B. Kimball.  Similar to the Traveler's guide above.  Maps follow the trail.

Historic Resource Study.  Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail.  A relatively large guide, 225 pages, concentrating more on the trek itself: trail routines and disciplines, types of wagons, Trail-side services, etc.  A few maps are in the appendices, and are not very suitable for a reference today.

Landmarks and Events Along the Historic Mormon Trail.  Published by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.  Site descriptions, not much on maps.

Brochures and handouts

Nauvoo the Beautiful and Historic Carthage Block.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  A very nice brochure you can pick up at or order from the Nauvoo Visitors Center.  Photographs and descriptions of the restored sites in Nauvoo and Carthage.

Historic Sites in North West Missouri.  A single sheet guide published by the Church.  Directions to Adan-Ondi-Ahman, Far West, Kingston, Richmond, Liberty and sites in Independence.

Council Bluffs Area Points of Interest.  A large single sheet guide consisting of a map of the council bluffs area.  Many points of interest detailed.  One can be picked up at the Western Historic Trails Center, just off highway 80, exit 1B in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  The staff is very helpful in locating LDS heritage sites on the map.

Mormon Pioneer Trail.  National Historic Trail Illinois to Utah. Published by the National park Service.  A brochure with a large single sheet map of the entire trail.

Iowa Mormon Trails.  A self-guiding tour of the Iowa Mormon trail across Iowa.  Large map depicts the actual trail and sites along with nearest highways.  Excellent guide for crossing Iowa.  This guide follows both the lower and upper trails followed at different times during the migration period

Nebraska's Mormon Trail.  A self-guided tour.  Similar to the brochure above.

Maps and summary guides.  These documents were scanned from leaflets garnered at visitor's centers for the various church sites.  They are posted here as a help to those interested in learning about or planning a trip to these historical sites.  They had no  copyright information and therefore the authors took the liberty to scan and post them for general use.  That we took this liberty does not limit the original author's rights in any way and we will cheerfully comply to any objections to a posted document.
