| The Martin Rescue Site The Martin Handcart Company was far behind the Willie company during the fall and winter of 1856. The party was met by rescuers from Salt Lake City who had left their wagons and fanned out in a final effort to find the company before giving up and returning to Salt Lake City. Once located, the party was led and encouraged on by the rescuers to Martin's cove, just above devil's gate, to shelter from storms and wait for rescuers from the west. The Martin company was first found camping on the Sweetwater river near what is now Casper Wyoming. Martin's Cove Sweetwater river near martin's cove
