Joseph Smith was brought to Richmond for a mock trial and it was from here that he was sent to Liberty Jail.  Alexander Doniphan of Richmond, not a member of the church, was a friend to the saints.  He refused point blank to carry out the illegal execution orders of the governor.  He stood for order and rule of law during a time when the government tolerated and even encouraged mobocracy and violence.
