| The Saints remained at Winter Quarters, along the banks of the Missouri River, the Winter of 1846/47. Brigham Young had planned to complete the trip to the Rocky Mountains in 1846, but the difficult trip across Iowa cost the Saints so much in both time and resources that a stop to rest, re-supply and wait out the winter was necessary. Statue on the Cemetery grounds Other statues and displays at the visitor's center Brigham Young traveled with the vanguard company to Salt Lake City in the summer of 1847, but returned to Winter Quarters that same fall as this was the temporary headquarters of the church.
